The State Board of Emergency Medical Services, at its regular meeting on
July 18, 2007, approved the addition of CPAP administration and
management to the scope of practice for the EMT-Basic and EMTIntermediate.
(BiPAP remains a Paramedic level skill.) The decision was
based, in part, on the results of a study conducted by the Aultman Health
Foundation (Canton, Ohio). The decision to add CPAP to the local
protocols will be a local decision.

The responsibility for training of personnel and ensuring acceptable
knowledge and competencies will lie with the local medical director.
Thank you to Mark Marchetta, Director, EMS Education – Aultman Health
Foundation, for providing the information regarding the CPAP study and
presentation material.
